Our 2nd Draft Critique Editors Will Not:

  • Rewrite or revise for you, except in the case of providing an example of how to revise on your own.

  • Check and correct for style (e.g., Chicago Manual of Style or AP style). This requires a professional copyeditor or proofreader.
  • Provide any fact-checking.
  • Provide answers or advice on legal issues.

Great service. Made for beginners. Review by Mendy

Very helpful, but if you're a novice who has just begun the process of honing your imagination-maneuvering skills to entrance your readers (and if you don't have any besides family members and friends, you'll have more soon) this editing service is basically a must.

Just like a video-game, you need to know what level of writing you're on, what your literary strengths and weaknesses are, where you need definite improvement and what you already do well but can be totally boss at. A critique lets you know where you are, whether it's Level 1 or even near the Boss Level. Ayekah.

I didn't attach any expectations to my first short story when I submitted it, except that I would be told how bad it sucked, even for a writer's first piece of work, and my stomach was an insect house of buzzing and fluttering life as I waited for a half-altered story to be returned to me.

It turns out I didn't have to wait long. Cherri Randall sent it back to me within a few days, all reviewed and critiqued, and, to my surprise, most of the paragraphs were still there! Along with them came valuable pointers about which parts of the story needed clarification and better/more description, which similes and word paintings were cliché and which original, and which grammar rules I violated most. The plot-and-fact-checking was also very useful.

But in the end of it all, the summary that comes after the story is where your money's worth is at. Cherri gave me invaluable lessons and tips, and most importantly, an assessment of my skills. Motivation was a consequence of that, because apparently I wasn't as terrible as I thought. I wasn't that bad at all. Now I know that I stand a chance at becoming a successful writer.

I had questions, naturally, and Cherri answered them all with lucidity and wit. Great, professional editer.

And so, hence, thus, and ergo, I highly recommend paying for this benevolence, for although you may find it a bit expensive, it's worth every copper coin. Especially, I repeat, ESPECIALLY if you are a beginner.

Best Money I've ever spent Review by Penny

I had some doubts when I decided to purchase 2nd Draft Short Story Critiques. I never had a professional look over a short story of mine. What would the tone and content of the review be like? Adding to my worry was the paucity of reviews. Why so few?

I needn't have worried. Without a doubt, this was the best money I've ever spent.

Carolyn Walker's comments, suggestions and insights were invaluable to me. I emailed her back for clarification on two terms she used. She responded the next day.

This is the first but not the last time I will use this service.
Thanks Writer's Digest!

Excellent Service & Advice Review by Andrew

I specifically requested best-selling SF&F author John DeChancie to critique my science fiction short story through the 2nd Draft service. Requesting feedback from a professional author of over two dozen books with twenty years experience in publishing was more than a little nerve-wracking, but John is delightful!

His critique pointed out where my manuscript succeeds, and where things could be improved. Areas of discussion included voice and style, word-craft, character, setting, and the general story itself. He also talked about the saleability of my short story, which was unexpected and very helpful.

I highly recommend both the Writer’s Digest 2nd Draft service, which does exactly what it says on the tin, and author John DeChancie, who’s witty critique was an insightful and enjoyable read.

Jack Adler's critique of my short story was extremely helpful. He reviewed the draft I provided him from a number of key perspectives: comments on the text of the story on a line by line basis, character development (or lack thereof), and the structure of the overall story itself.

His observations were clear and allowed me to recognize the flaws in each of the areas he covered. More importantly, his critique allowed me to recognize the areas where I needed to do additional training in the craft of short story writing to bring my skills up to a more professional level. He helped end my delusions about my writing ability, and has motivated me to restart this process from its foundations.

When I eventually prepare a new draft I'll definitely have it sent to Jack for another critique.

Critique was spot on Review by Cynthia

John DeChancie is excellent! Not only were his observations spot on about what needed to be fixed, he offered guidance and suggestions as I moved forward. John also pointed out what was working in the story and how I could build upon it. Excellent editor and excellent service. I highly recommend 2nd Draft Critique service for both Novel length and short stories.
