A Word From the Author:

"I saw a need for writers to have a comprehensive and systematic way to approach the editing and revision tasks. Most writers I knew (and I was one of them) just dove into revisions without a plan. Which is a little like a strawberry jumping into a blender.

Instead, knowing what to do and when to do it, knowing what questions to ask and when to ask them, creates a feeling of power in the writer that is invariably reflected in the finished manuscript.

And as writers, we can always go deeper. Which is why Writer’s Digest Books and I created a second edition.

In addition to the character questions asked on pages 43–44, I’ve added a chapter called “Deepening.” I’ve found in my own writing, as well as the work of students in my workshops, that there is a perfect place between the initial read-through and the start of revisions to add layers of solid material to the book.

This is done through some of the exercises I’ve used in my Next Level workshops. Many of my students have told me that one or more of these exercises opened up their stories like nothing else they’ve done, before or after. Major character motivations and plot problems have been solved this way. New and exciting story material has popped up out of the 'basement' and demanded to be noticed."

Useless book Review by DP
Rating

By its title, you can easily make a mistake what I did and what I want you to warn about. "Revision and Self–editing for publication" may leave you with the assumption that the book is dedicated to the complex issues of self–editing and revision of your novel, right? Wrong! It started, and for the next 200 pages, out of 268 total, continued with the same mantra–"Write! Don't quite! If you want to be a writer, all you have to do is to write!" and so on. How stupid! If anyone is buying a book with the title "how to revise and self–edit" isn't it means "she" already have something to edit? And with that "she" is another problem. Author keep addressing to the readers in the feminine gender as if it is only women who might be interested in that book. Strange! It left me wondering if a "male" authors ever self–edit their books. Looking at the example of that particular author, I might say that probably not, otherwise, after careful re–examination of his writing this "best-selling author", whose–name–I-never–heard–of, would cut at least a 267 pages out of his "work". Which will leave us, fortunate, with one page of advices which in itself is as old as a mammoth's bones.

Very well Organized and Helpful Review by Na

This Book was very well organized and I enjoyed the writing style of James Bell. I find his writing easy to follow and the way he structured the material allows you to understand the words on the paper.
In some of the instructional books I've read, I find myself rereading and having to reexamine the instructions to grasp the material. In some cases, I have to search for the Technics/phrases listed on the internet.
The book not only provides information about dialogue and plot structure but he also details points of view and useful tips for revision.
If you are an aspiring self publishing author or want to brush up on your editing skills, I highly recommend this book.
