A Tip About Networking From This eBook Excerpt:
As is true in many things, whom you know is very important. A glowing recommendation from the right person may be enough to see your play set in the fall schedule two years from now. With that in mind, don’t be a shut-in! Get out and network with actors, directors, producers, and everyone else who loves plays or knows someone who has power.
Consider working or volunteering at a local hall. Get to know the staff and how
a production functions. Familiarize yourself with all things theater. Sooner or later, there will be a good moment to mention that you, too, write plays. Even try acting in
some small productions and see how it feels. The more you know about how actors operate when delving into a character and moving around onstage, the better you can
craft a play with their likings in mind. If you get ridiculously lucky, you can bump into an angel or two—a wealthy arts lover who takes on passionate causes and bankrolls projects. Also, you may even be able to build a relationship with a theater that agrees to premiere all of your plays.
