Our 2nd Draft Critique Editors Will Not:

  • Rewrite or revise for you, except in the case of providing an example of how to revise on your own.
  • Correct grammar, mechanics and spelling. This requires our 2nd Draft Proofreading service. However, a reviewer will point out any patterns of surface-level error that may pose a significant problem for you.
  • Check and correct for style (e.g., Chicago Manual of Style or AP style). This requires a professional copyeditor or proofreader.
  • Provide any fact-checking.
  • Provide answers or advice on legal issues.

What Customers Are Saying About 2nd Draft...

"I was extremely pleased with the results I got from 2nd Draft. As a new writer, I was dying for some professional advice after finishing my first novel. The critique I received was invaluable. My editor, Terri Valentine, sent me a personal letter giving me advice on everything from POV flaws to grammatical mistakes to ways of making my book more of a page turner. In addition, she left comments, corrections, and suggestions throughout the pages I sent her. I will be forever grateful. Thank you 2nd Draft!" — Kim Chavez
"2nd Draft offered me a professional pair of fresh eyes and the spit shine my manuscript needed. I can now submit my first three chapters without hesitation." — Lynne Ellis Marino

Just What I Needed Review by Rose Avenue

Stephen Mertz provided the perspective that I was craving and he was brutally honest. All of his points resonated, the citing of specific examples from my manuscript were a great help, and his encouragement was so very welcome.

Good for the price. Jack Adler is great to work with. Review by Anders
Rating

This is not a heavy duty editing service, but still of great value for an inexperienced writer. Jack Adler was great to work with and responded quickly and to the point. He gave good advice on large scale issues of plot, wordiness, pace and so on; fundamental stuff that needs to be right. I did rather massive revisions of my manuscript based on his inputs, being as thorough as I could be in applying his advice. I was able to distill the thing down to 2/3 of its original size. It allowed me to focus sharply on what was important to say, rather than to go off on little tangents, however amusing.

Excellent Service Review by PETER
Rating

As a novice writer I found this service to be excellent. Last year I had the first 100 pages of my novel Critiqued. On the basis of this I did a complete edit. This year I had the complete book Critiqued. I'm now making final changes before publication.

Jack Adler did the Critiques. He did my reviews in a timely manner, was and blunt. All of which I appreciated. He is the best.

Rather Generic Review by Bemish
Rating

I purchased a 2nd Draft Manuscript Critique Service. Disclaimer: I may have not selected the critique appropriate for the type of review I needed.

I was hoping for a critique of the story arc presented in the first 100 pages of my story. Ideally, something that would have included mark-ups on my draft that I saw in an example from the website. I received a very nice but rather generic five page note of encouragement that picked out a couple of characters and a quote. My sense was the review was a bit of a cut-and-paste (including a repeated paste at one point). The review sadly misidentified the genre of the story and thus was little use in assessing the impact of the story at all (that in itself maybe a powerful critique!). Suggestions were generic and not incidental to the plot, such as the classic “SHOW AND NOT TELL”.

Honestly, I expected too much for the price paid – a close review of 100 pages would probably take a day or two, and $300 would hardly cover that much time. The low price also means that the reviewer is not available for any follow-up questions should the customer have any. Other review services from 2nd Draft might be useful, but I would not purchase a Manuscript Critique Service again.
